The NASMEC Institute is a non-profit organisation, incorporated under the Companies Act Cap 108 of Uganda. We bring together Uganda’s foremost clinicians, researchers, and public health professionals in a shared mission: to provide high-level technical leadership in Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health, and to end preventable deaths that no woman, baby, or family should have to endure.
Working in partnership with the Ministry of Health, development partners, cultural leaders and civil society, NASMEC drives evidence-informed policy, quality service delivery, and innovation across Uganda’s MNCAH landscape. We operate at the intersection of the clinic, the community, and the corridors of policy — where sustained, expert-led engagement determines whether evidence translates into lives saved.

Preventing obstetric emergencies and ensuring every woman has access to skilled, respectful, and timely care, from the first antenatal visit through safe delivery and postpartum recovery.
Newborn and Child Health
Reducing neonatal mortality through essential newborn care, resuscitation skills, and strengthened clinical capacity for the management of small and sick newborns.
Health Systems Strengthening
Developing clinical standards, supporting national guideline development, and building the referral and workforce capacity that underpins high-quality MNCAH service delivery.
Community Engagement
Addressing the First Delay in care-seeking through community education, social behaviour change, and stronger linkages between Ugandan communities and the formal health system.

Flagship Programmes
Evidence is the foundation of NASMEC’s credibility and the engine of its influence. Consistent with our Mission to generate and translate evidence into improved quality of care, the NASMEC Institute maintains an active research agenda that produces original knowledge, synthesises existing evidence, and converts findings into practical guidance for policymakers, programme managers, and health workers. We are committed to research that is rigorous, relevant, and directly responsive to Uganda’s most pressing MNCAH challenges.
EmONC Network Optimisation
NASMEC leads strategic analysis and strengthening of Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care networks across Uganda’s eight regional referral hospital catchment areas, using GIS and accessibility modelling to ensure that geography does not determine who lives and who dies.
